OVERWEIGHT AND OBESITY

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a tool for classifying weight of an individual.

As per the World Health Organization (WHO), the (revised) BMI cut-offs for Asians for Overweight and Obesity are as follows:

BMI of 23.0-27.5                        Overweight (Pre Obese)
BMI of 27.6 ≥ 37.6                      Obesity

Being Overweight and specially being Obese can make a person prone to disorders including but not limited to the following:

- Hyperlipidemia
- Dyslipidemia
- Sleep Apnoea
- Hernia

In Women-
- Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
- Reduced fertility
- Menstrual irregularities
- High risk pregnancy

Both the Genders-
- Increased mortality and morbidity due to chronic degenerative diseases
- Cardiovascular diseases (Including Hypertension, Stroke)
- Diabetes Mellitus Type 2
- Certain Cancers
- Delayed wound healing
- Poor surgical outcome
